Over at InternetBlog, in an article entitled VeriSign Raises Domain Prices, Gets 27 Million Extra, Alison noted that;
VeriSign has informed its registrars that the wholesale prices of .com and .net domains will be going up as of July 1st, 2010.
Prices of ‘.com’ and ‘.net’ domain names will undergo price increases of 7% for .com and increase as much as 10% for .net domains.
Alison further postulated as to how much VeriSign would gain in revenue as a result of this hike in prices, noting that;
We can only expect the registrars to pass these costs on to the market, possibly at higher rates again. Verisign can now increase domain prices by a rate of 7% each year, meaning it just added an extra $27 million to its takings.
As VeriSign’s revenue increases, so too does the cost of purchasing domain names which is passed on to consumers. If you’re in the business of purchasing domain names or merely considering the purchase of a domain name, make your purchase before July 1st to avoid increased costs.
VeriSign is a powerhouse in the internet network security industry and is the SSL Certificate provider of choice for over 95% of Fortune 500 companies and also for 96 of the world’s largest banks. It groups all of these functions under the banner of 'trusted Internet infrastructure' services and on Wiki, VeriSign is;
“An American company based in Mountain View, CA that operates a diverse array of network infrastructure, including two of the Internet's thirteen root nameservers, the generic top-level domains for .com and .net. VeriSign also provides a variety of security services ranging from digital certificates, and managed PKI to two-factor authentication.”
On VeriSign’s ‘corporate information’ webpage, the company boasts that it facilitates as many as 50 billion authoritative Domain Name System (DNS) queries a day, a service which it has been providing since 1998.
Although this information seems a bit outdated now, VeriSign goes on to note that it,
“Plans to increase capacity of the .com and .net DNS by 10 times by 2010 to provide the security and stability required for global Internet-based transactions.
Has invested over $500 million invested in Project Titan, a global initiative to exponentially increase the core infrastructure capacity and heighten security systems.”
As a result of these investments in Project Titan, VeriSign expects that;
“These enhancements will allow VeriSign to increase daily DNS query capacity tenfold from 400 billion queries a day currently to 4 trillion queries a day.
Scaling our proprietary systems will increase bandwidth capacity ten times from more than 20 gigabits per second (Gbps) to greater than 200 Gbps.”
